Todays Ask Dr. Ebiz:  Don't "Cloak" Your Site's Webpages

The Best Day to Send Your Email Marketing Message

Wondering when your e-mail marketing messages will get the most action? According to emailLabs, Wednesdays are the most popular days of the week for opening and clicking-though on e-mail marketing messages.

Over 25% of its clients sent out e-mail marketing on a Tuesday. Wednesday, however, was e-mail marketers' best day for opens and click-throughs. emailLabs notes that 22.8% of its clients' e-mails were opened on Wednesday in Q3. Wednesday kept its spot as the most popular open day from Q1 to Q3, falling slightly to 22% of all e-mails in Q2.

"I would like to know how to hide my site's keywords, description, and other elements from competitors." -- Cheah Wai Loon, CWL Import Export Services

What you seek to do is called "cloaking," which supposedly protects your high search engine ranking by preventing your competitors from stealing your successful code. Essentially, cloaking scripts identify search engine "spiders" when they index your webpages, either by the spiders' IP addresses or by their UserAgent variables. The cloaking script shows real optimized webpages only to the spiders, while regular people are redirected to the home page. The CGI Resource Index lists a couple of these scripts: SellWide Cloaker and myCgiScripts' Cloaking Script. But in my opinion you'd be very foolish to use a cloaking script for two reasons:

  1. You can get permanently banned. Cloaking is considering spamming or tricking the search engine. If Google detects you doing this, you could be banned permanently. How will they catch you? Your competitor turns you in and someone at Google checks it out.
  2. Ranking can't be easily manipulated. It used to be that Google and other search engines ranked your webpage by elements contained solely on your webpage -- metatags, headlines, content, etc. In those days, cloaking made more sense for sites with a top position. But these days, the keyword metatag is no longer used for ranking and the description metatag isn't nearly as important. Search engines index your site by analyzing your webpage -- especially title, headlines, and body text -- but they rank your webpage based on multiple factors, including the quantity and quality of incoming links to your website. Perhaps 50% or more of the ranking algorithm could be comprised of factors external to your webpage.

Rather than cloaking, spend time building good content and links to your site using old fashioned networking -- contacting other businesses and asking them to link to you. These days it's not trickery, but knowing others and being known that gets you a higher ranking.
